ABC Capital Bank Posts Strong Turnaround with 285% Profit Surge

ABC Capital Bank Limited has reported a strong financial rebound, reflecting the effectiveness of its turnaround strategy and renewed confidence in its long-term growth trajectory.

The 2025 financial results show a clear shift from prior volatility to sustained profitability, driven by disciplined execution, strategic investment, and strengthened governance.

Profit after tax surged by 285% to Shs520 million in 2025, up from Shs135 million in 2024, marking a significant recovery following a loss of Shs515 million in 2023. This improvement was also reflected in pre-tax performance, with profit before tax rising to Shs702.8 million from Shs404.5 million, indicating stronger operational efficiency and improved earnings momentum across core business segments.

Net operating income grew to Shs7.59 billion, supported by interest income of Shs7.29 billion and steady growth in fees and commission income of Shs591.9 million. This diversified revenue base reflects improved stability and reduced reliance on a single income stream.

The Bank’s balance sheet remained stable, with total assets increasing to Shs60.8 billion from Shs59.2 billion. Shareholders’ funds strengthened to Shs32.4 billion, reflecting improved capitalization, while net loans and advances rose to Shs21.2 billion, signaling continued support to the private sector.

According to Executive Director Christopher Kabagambe, the results are a direct outcome of deliberate strategic repositioning, including digital transformation, product diversification, and strengthened corporate governance. Improved cost discipline and balance sheet optimization also contributed to sustainable earnings growth.

A key highlight of the year was the Bank’s strengthened capital position, with capital adequacy levels remaining well above regulatory requirements, underscoring prudent risk management and strong capital allocation.

Strategic milestones during the year included the transition to Tier II (Class 5) banking status, effective July 2024, which expanded the Bank’s operational scope within Uganda’s financial sector. The relocation to new premises improved customer experience and corporate visibility, while the rollout of a mobile lending platform enhanced access to credit for retail and SME clients.

The introduction of the Agricultural Credit Facility further aligned the Bank with national priorities, supporting financial inclusion and Uganda’s agro-industrialisation agenda.

Governance reforms, including the appointment of additional independent non-executive directors, strengthened oversight and risk management systems, enhancing institutional discipline and accountability.

Looking ahead, ABC Capital Bank is expected to maintain its focus on innovation, product expansion, and sectoral lending, positioning itself as a more resilient and future-ready financial institution.

Overall, the 2025 performance marks a major turning point for the Bank, reflecting not only a return to profitability but also the emergence of a stronger, more stable growth trajectory.
